New Coke Failure

Poor market research contributed to the failure of New Coke, introduced in 1985 (Benjamin, 2015).

The business assumed that Coke’s taste was the magic reason for sales lagging behind Pepsi.

The business only focused on the physical aspect of the beverage, not the psychological components that went into the marketing efforts.

The marketers neglected to conduct research with their target audience, to determine if they wanted a change in the taste of the Coca-Cola product.

Coca-Cola did not recognize motivators for their customers

Customers have an emotional attachment to their preferred brands. Consumers feel nostalgic about the brands they are loyal to.

Coca-Cola neglected to consider the product identify classification

Consumers identify the beverage with the Company. Even though Coca-Cola has numerous drinks, Coke was viewed as a “flagship” beverage for the company.

Coca-Cola did not provide consumers with a choice.

When New Coke was introduced, customers did not have a choice as to which beverage they purchased. The “old” Coke was immediately pulled from the shelves, causing consumers to hoard the original beverage.

Recommendations

Offer

Offer New Coke along with the traditional Coca-Cola formula

Offering both soft drinks would have allowed consumers a choice. Therefore, Coca-Cola could have determined if the sales of one outperformed the other to determine which formula to keep.

Consider

Consider new advertising tactics to improve sales

Altering advertising techniques and appeals would have provided consumers with new reasons to buy Coke.

Hire

Hire a new spokesperson

Attracting a new generation by hiring a spokesperson the younger target audience could identify with. In turn, this group would have become loyal customers of the brand.
