Steps to Success:
1.) Pick a problem or social issue: Social workers attempt to address all sorts of problems.
What’s your dream job? Is there a problem or social issue that exists that you think you
want to make a career out of solving? Is there a problem or situation that needs to be
solved that you think you would be willing to work towards solving from now until
you’re 80? If so, what is it? This is the question you might have to fake if you really have
no idea what you want to do in the future.
2.) Next Step: Study The Assignment Questions: You will have to do research in order to
answer the following questions:
a.) Define the problem or social issue. What is the issue/problem that you chose?
Include the scope of the problem, i.e. how big is the problem? How many people
does it affect?
b.) Who is the target population? Who are the clients in need of service? Include
information regarding the:
i.) age ranges
ii.) gender

and/or macro practice methods and provide at least one example of each practice
method. If they do micro, such as case management, you would need to say micro
and give examples of case management that they do.
d.) What is the role of the social worker in this field? What do social workers do to
help solve the problem? Example: Case management, therapy, advoccy, etc.
e.) What are the presenting problems in this field of service? With the field in general
related to the issue you chose, what are some challenges facing the field.
Example: what are the challenges Child Welfare Services face? Insufficient
funding? Not enough employees? Limited research? Etc.
f.) What are the barriers to service for the target population? What challenges to
clients face in accessing services? What gets in the way of clients getting
services? Example: lack of transportation.
g.) What are the individual and environmental/societal causes of problems?
i.) What do clients do that get them into the situation to where they need help
with the problem?
ii.) How does society ‘cause’ the problem to exist?
h.) What ethical and/or value dilemmas do social workers face in this field of
service? What kind of ethical challenges, or challenges to ones values, could
social workers face when trying to solve the issue you chose? Example: conflict of
interest, confidentiality, sexy clients.
i.) What is the anticipated income for social workers in this field of service? How
much money do social workers working on solving the problem you chose make
per year? Look it up on Glassdoor or Indeed or Google.
j.) (This is the only part of the paper that can be written in 1st person) What is your
assessment of your continued interest in the field of service? Did anything show
up for you personally or what about this case study was challenging? What did
you learn about yourself? Example: After completing this assignment I realized
(feelings, thoughts, experiences)?
